Reduce Boat Fuel Waste

Reducing boat fuel waste is an important part of clean & green boating and saves you money. There are many ways to reduce your boat’s fuel use and reduce the environmental effects of boating.  By reducing fuel consumption we can help preserve boating experiences for future boaters.

• Slow down, not so fast.  A wide open throttle, can use 50 percent more fuel than mid-range settings.
• Practice good boat maintenance and have your engine tuned annually. Poor maintenance will increase fuel use.
• Use the proper grade of fuel recommended by your engine’s manufacturer.
• Keep the bottom clean. If dirty it will reduce boat performance and increase fuel use.
• Make sure you have the proper power and propeller for the size of your boat. If you are under powered or using the wrong size prop you will waste fuel.
• Reduce the weight. Only carry the fuel and water needed for your trip.  Heavier boats require the use of greater horsepower and fuel at any speed.
• It’s a good idea to pre-plan your trips, this saves fuel by being familiar with your intended route. Also, it’s a good idea to plan trips so you can run with the prevailing wind and tide.
• Trim tabs are a good investment, they reduce drag and save fuel.
• Reduce idling time while at the dock.
• When available use shore power to reduce generator fuel use.
